Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole celebrate a goal

Everton boss Frank Lampard has brought in his former England and Chelsea team-mate Ashley Cole as a first-team coach, the club have confirmed.

Cole’s new role will not impact his duties with England Under-21s, for whom he remains Lee Carsley’s assistant.

Why oh why did Man Utd not sign another Andy Kellett?

Lampard told the club’s website: “I’m delighted to add Ashley into my backroom team. Everyone knows about his superb playing career and what he has achieved in the game.

“He is now a well-respected coach which has been recognised by his work with England Under-21s.

“He’ll bring a wealth of enthusiasm, game-play experience and is a very good young coach who adds strength to our coaching staff.”

Cole said: “I was thrilled when Frank asked me to join him at Everton. This is a brilliant opportunity with a fantastic club and I am coming here to work hard and try to help bring success to Everton.

“The chance to link up again with Frank was another huge draw.

“He is an excellent manager and leader. With the rest of the staff here, we have everything in place for what we want to achieve together.”

News of Cole’s appointment came shortly before Lampard held his first press conference as Everton manager.

With the team 16th in the Premier League, the 43-year-old recognises he has a tough job on his hands from the start.

He said: “Of course we know we’re in a position the club doesn’t want to be in. I’m under no illusions but I’ve got a lot of belief in the squad.”

Lampard is returning to frontline management a year after leaving Chelsea and is proud to have been given an opportunity by Everton.

He added: “In the short term, the job is to try to improve the league position – and in the long term, it is clear this is a club with huge ambition, huge history, a huge fanbase.

“There is a lot of work to be done but I’m very proud to be given this opportunity.”

Lampard continued: “I was very thankful for the messages of support and general support.

“I don’t expect universal support – people have their own opinions – but I’m thankful. At the same time, I hope people see how I have a work ethic and how I am going to embrace this job.

“There is a huge amount of talent here that, if I didn’t believe in or think I was the man to come in and bring that out, then I wouldn’t be here.”
