Ousmane Dembele and Christian Pulisic have explained why they rejected the chance to join Liverpool.

Both Borussia Dortmund youngsters have been the subject of intense interest across Europe over the last couple of years.

Dembele was courted by a number of clubs when it became clear that Rennes were open to selling him in summer 2016.

Liverpool, along with Premier League champions Leicester, competed for his signature, but both missed out to the Bundesliga side.

“I saw Klopp in Paris but I told him I had made up my mind to sign for Dortmund,” Dembele told FourFourTwo.

“I told Claudio Ranieri the same thing.”

Liverpool’s pursuit of Pulisic is more well-documented. The Reds made a £17m bid for the winger in the summer, with Jurgen Klopp refusing to discuss the rumours.

The United States international signed a new deal with Dortmund in January, and explained that he never really considered moving to Anfield.

“I have respect for Klopp and I know him – he was very welcoming to me here – but I was never really thinking about going to Liverpool,” Pulisic said.

“Dortmund have given me everything. If I work very hard here I will play and I love this club.”
