France coach Didier Deschamps reckons Paul Pogba should be in the running for the Ballon d’Or.
The Manchester United midfielder put a difficult season behind him to inspire France to World Cup glory, scoring in the final as Deschamps’ men beat Croatia 4-2
Deschamps, who became only the third man to win the World Cup as both a player and a coach, has paid tribute to Pogba and his ability to ignore the media hype and scrutiny.
“Paul was relaxed,” Deschamps told L’Equipe. “He knew why he was there.
“Paul managed to free himself from the burden created by the press.”
When asked which of his players could be in the running for the Ballon d’Or, Deschamps said: “Of course, Raphael [Varane] deserves it.
“Will he win it? He is a defender. Generally speaking, it goes to more attacking players.
“With Kylian [Mbappe], he has time, but look at what he has already achieved!
“Do not forget Paul either – just do not ask me to choose between them!”
