The Bees had the better of the few chances in a hard-fought contest but lacked the killer punch and Pools survived on goal difference thanks to Gillingham’s defeat at Wycombe.
Brentford winger Myles Weston went closest with a 30-yard screamer which Hartlepool keeper Scott Flinders tipped over.
At the other end Bees keeper Wojciech Szczesny had to be at his best to thwart Roy O’Donovan with a brilliant double save when the striker was through with 15 minutes remaining.
