Arsenal supporters might be hoping that Arsene Wenger signs a central midfielder during this transfer window, but they will at least be pleased by the progress of Mikel Arteta from injury.
Arsenal captain Arteta has not played for the club since the defeat to West Brom in November, when he was substituted with a calf problem.
Arteta, now 33, has struggled with injuries over the last few seasons. He made his comeback for Arsenal’s Under-21 team against Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday afternoon.
Arteta only managed 45 minutes, but Wenger will be pleased to have his captain back with Francis Coquelin laid low with injury. Mathieu Flamini and Calum Chambers are both unideal options to protect Arsenal’s defence. As is Arteta, as it happens.
For those of you that care, Arsenal beat Blackburn 3-2. Jeff Reine-Adelaide scored twice; we know how much you like him.
Expected returns 9 Jan: Alexis 13 Jan: Arteta 24 Jan: Rosicky 13 Feb: Wilshere 27 Feb: Coquelin Feb: Welbeck March: Cazorla [physioroom]
