£25m transfer set to boost Arsenal transfer budget
Arsenal will receive £250,000 as part of Donyell Malen’s £25m move to Borussia Dortmund from PSV, according to a report.
The Dutchman played for the Gunners at youth level in which it never worked out at the Emirates, he then left north London for the Eredivisie for a fee of around a quarter of a million pounds.
Since then, Malen has developed into a top centre-forward, scoring 27 goals in the season just gone and even breaking into the Dutch national side and playing a part in their EURO 2020 campaign.
Five reasons for Spurs to be cheerful – even if *he* leaves
According to football.london’s chief Arsenal reporter Chris Wheatley – Arsenal are set to lap up 1% of the sell-on fee which was included in the players’ contract when they sold the player which comes out at £250,000.
It may not seem a lot of money but every little helps in the current economic climate of football when the vast majority of clubs don’t have money to splash, relying on loan and swap deals to do business.
Malen’s exit has had fans asking questions as to why Arsenal let a player of this talent leave the club but in reality, the lure of first-team football was too much for the 22-year-old.
When he left Arsenal he said: “It was going well in England, but I still wanted to leave Arsenal because I had the opportunity to sign for PSV. I took that chance.”
On the face of it, you can argue the players’ decision was the correct one. Arsenal had Olivier Giroud, Alexis Sanchez, Danny Welbeck, and Theo Walcott all ahead of him as well as Alexandre Lacazette who arrived shortly after his departure.
He went to develop in a lower league and now he is reaping the rewards from his gamble. Malen was a prolific scorer for the Hale End in which he produced 27 direct goal contributions (goals or assists) in 58 appearances.
Borussia Dortmund will likely deploy their new signing as a winger in place of Jadon Sancho who has left for the Premier League or they also have the option of pairing him up with Erling Haaland. A mouthwatering prospect if you love seeing goals.
