Former Borussia Dortmund manager Lucien Favre has ‘confirmed his interest’ in taking over from Steve Bruce at Newcastle.

Favre was reportedly close to becoming Crystal Palace’s new boss in the summer before swerving Selhurst Park at the last minute.

The Swiss was one of four candidates rumoured to be on the Public Investment Fund’s (PIF) shortlist when the takeover was first mooted back in April 2020, along with Rafa Benitez, Max Allegri and Mauricio Pochettino.

This time around, Brendan Rodgers, Roberto Martinez, Steven Gerrard, Antonio Conte and Graham Potter are among the names being linked.

But The Northern Echo claims Favre is among the most likely candidates and state that the 63-year-old has ‘used an intermediary to confirm his interest in taking charge of the Magpies’.

The report adds that Favre ‘is aware of the recent developments on Tyneside and would like the opportunity to lead Newcastle’s new dawn as Bruce’s successor’.

Bruce is far from a fan favourite at St James’ Park and was under severe pressure before the successful purchase of the club from Mike Ashley last week.

Newcastle currently sit 19th in the division with no wins from their first seven games this season.

On his future at the club, Bruce said: “I want to continue, I’d like the chance to show the new owners what I can do, but you have to be realistic and they may well want a new manager to launch things for them.

“New owners normally want a new manager. I’ve been around long enough to understand that.

“That decision is not up to me. I accept that and I will accept what comes my way. I have to wait to have those conversations with people when the time is right.

“Long before I played football, long before I became a manager, I was a Newcastle United fan.

“I’d love to see this club win something, to play in Europe and from everything I’ve heard about these new owners, that is what they want too and they have the money to make it happen.”
