Chelsea target Dries Mertens has ended speculation about his future by signing a new two-year deal at Napoli.

The Belgium forward, Napoli’s all-time top goalscorer with 122 since joining the club in 2013, was recently linked with a move to Chelsea.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis said on Twitter: “Pleased to be together for a long time to come – long live Dries!”

The experienced forward has been in top form for Napoli once again this season, scoring 12 goals in 29 appearances, sparking a battle for his signature as a result.

The latest news, however, ends any hopes Chelsea or Liverpool reportedly had of landing the 32-year-old.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard was reportedly so keen to land Mertens that he was phoning the Belgium international ‘almost every day’.
