Ainsley Maitland-Niles has signed a new long-term contract at Arsenal.
Maitland-Niles emerged as one of Arsenal’s finest young talents under Arsene Wenger, making his first-team debut in December 2014.
The England youth international became Arsenal’s second-youngest Champions League player ever, with a loan at Ipswich aiding in his development.
Last season saw him break through into the Arsenal first team however, making 28 appearances, of which 20 were starts.
He impressed to such an extent that chief executive Ivan Gazidis stated that new manager Unai Emery was “very excited” to work with him.
Maitland-Niles even formed part of Emery’s job interview. “Unai knows Ainsley,” Gazidis said last month. “He’s watched him, he’s familiar with his patterns of play, his capabilities, he’s very excited about his potential and was able to talk about how excited he was to work with Ainsley, to develop him as a player.”
The Arsenal website have confirmed that the 20-year-old has ‘signed a long-term contract extension,’ and that the club ‘look forward to your continued progress with us’.
Arsenal clearly read our feature on shirt numbers. He’s wearing the previously vacant No. 15.
