Kevin Phillips believes Liverpool are in need of a “world-class midfielder” and Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham would “fit the mould”.

Liverpool have been linked with the Borussia Dortmund midfielder of late.

The 18-year-old has been an ever-present for Dortmund since he joined them from Birmingham City in 2020 for around £25m.

Bellingham has been a standout player for the German side this season. He scored over the weekend as they fought back from behind Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2.

The midfielder has been involved in 13 goals from his 25 Dortmund appearances this term. He has already been capped ten times by England.

Phillips believes it is “vital” that Liverpool bring in a new midfielder. He thinks they will address this issue during the summer:

“Milner and Henderson will be another year older so I think it’s vital they get another midfielder in,” the ex-Premier League striker told Football Insider.

“There’s been a lot of talk about Jude Bellingham. He is someone who could be the long-term future of that midfield. He could be one that comes in.

“Milner has been an incredible servant but his time will come eventually. For a club of Liverpool’s size and the position they are in, they need a world-class centre-midfielder.

“Jude Bellingham is one player who certainly fits the mould. It’s an area they need to address in the summer, 100 per cent, and I think they will.”

Elsewhere, Gabriel Agbonlahor has suggested that Bellingham is “worth every penny” of his reported £90m valuation:

“He’d be worth every penny,” Agbonlahor said.

“He’s 18, he’s going to keep improving. I’ve watched him a few times, he’s unbelievable, and he’s going to keep improving, especially at Dortmund where he’s playing every week.

“I think it makes sense if he goes to Liverpool as well because you have to keep improving.

“Manchester City have improved their squad, Chelsea have, and Liverpool – [Naby] Keita, [Alex] Oxlade-Chamberlain – are they really the players that are going to keep Liverpool up there? I’m not sure.

“But Bellingham would fit straight into that midfield in there.”
