The visitors took the lead with their first attack after just nine minutes. A high ball over the defence should have been cleared easily by Michael Raynes, but he was brushed aside on the edge of the area by Chris Porter who then had no trouble beating Andy Warrington in the Rotherham goal.
Lewis Grabban could have levelled for Rotherham after 19 minutes, but his shot was well saved by George Long, who followed that up with an even better save from Jason Taylor just before the break.
Porter had a great chance to double the Blades’ lead after 37 minutes when he was first to another long ball over the defence, but his shot went high over the bar. And Evans came within a whisker of a second for the Blades 10 minutes after the break with a rasping shot which the hit the bar.
With 69 minutes gone, Rotherham equalised. Ben Pringle sent Grabban away on the left, his shot hit the upright but Alex Revell was lurking on the six-yard line to slam home the rebound.
However, Evans won it with a shot from the edge of the box that went in off the post.
