Everton director of football Marcel Brands is leaving the club with ‘immediate effect’, according to reports.

Brands joined Everton in May 2018 and is only seven months into a three-year contract, but the Mirror claim he has left the club by mutual consent.

The report says the 59-year-old will step down with immediate effect after agreeing on a severance package. He will reportedly be paid until the end of the 2021/22 season.

Newcastle finally win as Burnley provide no real fight

The news was also broke on Twitter by Mirror journalist Simon Mullock, who said: ‘I understand that Everton director of football Marcel Brands is leaving the club.’

Brands enjoyed previous spells in the Netherlands with AZ Alkmaar and PSV Eindhoven.

During his time at the Toffees, he has almost spent £300million, with his recruitment record attracting plenty of criticism.

Everton’s next opponents are Arsenal, and Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has responded to criticism from club legend Thierry Henry.

Henry claimed that Arteta was wrong to take off Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang during Arsenal’s 3-2 loss at Manchester United on Thursday.

“Aubameyang is your captain. He is your goal scorer,” Henry told Amazon Prime Sport.

“You put him as your captain. 15 minutes to go, you’re losing 3-2 and you take him off. 3-2 away from home, you need a goal and you take your captain, your symbol, off the field. You know he can score goals so something is not right there.”

Arteta responded: “We made a decision to get the best out of the team and I believe in that moment it was the right call to get some fresh legs on.

“The way he trains and the way he’s behaving he doesn’t look any different to me. We need his goals and his performances and we know he is part of our success.”

He added: “Of course, you’re always concerned when your main striker doesn’t score goals but he’s trying his hardest and he’s aware of how much we need him to score goals.

“At the moment they are not coming but everything else we ask him to do, he is doing his best.”
