Everton fans backed to forget forward’s January snub as pundit feels summer move ‘would work’
Former Everton man Kevin Campbell feels Toffees fans will not “have a problem” with Arnaut Danjuma if he signs for the club, after snubbing them for Tottenham in January.
Danjuma was one of a number of stars that Everton attempted to sign in January. Their goalscoring record was poor throughout the campaign – by the end of the season, they’d scored just 34 goals in 38 Premier League games.
Obviously, the tally was also a measly one in January, and the Toffees were looking out for attacking reinforcements.
They thought they’d found one in Danjuma, having agreed a loan deal with Villarreal, with the forward completing his medical and even some media duties, only for Tottenham to swoop and land him for themselves.
After scraping Premier League survival for the second season running, the Toffees are yet again on the lookout for fresh faces to aid their chances next season, and have Danjuma in their sights for the second window running.
Fans might not take lightly to the fact he snubbed them in January, but former Toffee Campbell feels there’ll be no problem if the forward is to make the move.
“Listen, I don’t think the fans will have a problem with it to be honest,” Campbell told Goodison News.
“At the end of the day the player’s got to do what’s right for him and don’t forget he was negotiating with [Frank] Lampard.
“Then Lampard got the sack, so if you’re going to the club for somebody and then you find out that they’re not there then the decision is now different.”
That the manager changed from Lampard to Sean Dyche at the back end of the window might have been the problem. Indeed, Danjuma might have believed the plans were going to change, after being convinced by those of the former.
However, in all honesty, he probably saw the opportunity to join a better side in Spurs and ran with it.
Campbell thinks this should be a learning experience for Everton, and does not suggest that a bigger side coming in caught Danjuma’s eye.
“That’s what happened and an offer came in. He chose Spurs, no problem. That was a blow to Everton but they’d already sacked the manager when they hadn’t secured the player,” Campbell added
“This is just one of those things with Everton, again, secure the player first, then if you’re going to get rid of the manager make sure he’s secured. They jumped the gun.”
In any case, he feels Danjuma would be welcomed and could have a good spell at Goodison.
“I think it can [work]. It would be a loan, that could work, definitely. Decent player.”
If Danjuma is to join Everton, he’ll likely play more often than the 12 times he did at Tottenham, in a move that he probably should have avoided in hindsight.
The Toffees will hope they can get productivity out of him like he has shown at Villarreal – 10 goals and three assists in 23 La Liga games in the 2021/22 season.
