Everton target Marcelo Bielsa is reportedly ‘set to reject’ the manager’s job at Goodison Park so they are being made to look elsewhere.
The Toffees have been moving quickly to secure a replacement for Frank Lampard after the former Chelsea and Derby County boss was sacked earlier this week.
The Premier League winner left Everton with the club joint-bottom with Southampton. He managed to keep them up last season but the club’s woes have carried over into this campaign.
Everton’s next game is against Arsenal on February 4 and the club have made it clear that they intended to have a new manager in place by the end of this week.
It was reported on Thursday that Bielsa and Sean Dyche are the ‘frontrunners’ for the Everton job. Ex-Liverpool man Danny Murphy thinks Everton would be foolish to bring in the ex-Leeds head coach.
“No. Not in a million years. I respect everything he did at Leeds from the moment he went in and the journey they went on,” Murphy told talkSPORT.
“But what I saw at the end of his tenure at Leeds was a team in disarray and all over the place.
“And if he goes to Everton and tries to implement that style of football in a relegation fight, they’re down.
“They don’t have the personnel to play like that anyway – the man-to-man type of style and pressing all over the place. No.”
When asked if Bielsa’s training methods would benefit Everton, Murphy added: “You have to be careful with that.
“Because it’s a bit of a myth that a manager can come in and become a tyrant overnight and the players get on board with it.
“Because what you can find quite quickly is they go the other way – especially if he’s only in on a temporary basis and he starts making them train two or three times a day.”
Doubts have been raised by Bielsa amid Everton’s ‘lack of pace’ and The Daily Mail are reporting that he is ‘set to turn down the chance’ to become their new manager.
Bielsa has held ‘positive talks’ with Everton’s hierarchy but he is ‘expected’ to tell them that ‘he does not want the role at this time and would prefer to take charge in July’.
The report adds that Dyche is now in ‘pole position’ to take over though ‘there is work to be done to secure a deal’.
A separate report from Sky Sports states that Dyche is ‘expected to be appointed Everton manager today [Friday]’. They add that the former Clarets boss has ‘won the race’ to get the job.
