We’re concentrating on 1 to 20, otherwise we’d be here all sodding day…
Vacant numbers: 3, 13
Formerly held by: Kieran Gibbs, David Ospina.
The No.3 shirt was last seen hanging off Jordi Osei-Tutu (now 52 – number, not age) in the Europa League last season after Kieran Gibbs left it behind when he joined West Brom. Perhaps Unai Emery has plans for the No.13 having been underwhelmed so far by his goalkeepers. It won’t be adorning Keylor Navas’s back, though.
Vacant numbers: 12, 14, 18
Formerly held by: Aaron Ramsdale, Brad Smith, Jermain Defoe.
Eddie Howe has filled his 1-11 so Dominic Solanke opted to take the No.29, presumably because it brought him so much luck at Liverpool…
Vacant numbers: 12, 15, 18
Formerly held by: Niki Maenpaa, Jamie Murphy, Connor Goldson.
Chris Hughton had 1-26 filled last season but Steven Gerrard – aided by Bristol City – ruined everything.
Vacant numbers: 8, 15, 17, 19
Formerly held by: Dean Marney, Patrick Bamford, Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Jon Walters.
Presumably No.8 wasn’t retired by the Clarets after it hung for seven glorious years on Dean Marney’s back. Jon Walters may well take back No.19 after returning from his loan at Ipswich, though whether Sean Dyche wants to give it back to him is another matter.
Vacant number: 15
Formerly held by: Greg Halford.
Halford’s shirt remains unoccupied after leaving in the summer. So does Halford.
Vacant numbers: 9, 14, 16
Formerly held by: Alvaro Morata, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Kenedy.
Chelsea need a new No.9 in every possible sense. Alvaro Morata wore it last season before moving to 29 – not because that is the number of chances he needs to score a goal, but to honour the birth of his twins. John Terry’s No.26 is still vacant too; we presume he would kill any usurpers with his bare hands.
Vacant numbers: 9, 16, 19
Formerly held by: Alexander Sorloth, Diego Cavalieri, Freddie Ladapo.
However will Palace fill Alexander Sorloth’s shirt? Or indeed Freddie Ladapo’s?
Vacant numbers: 2, 7, 9, 15
Formerly held by: Mason Holgate, Yannick Bolasie, Sandro Ramírez, Cuco Martina.
All four will return to Everton – in name at least – but at least three might find someone in their shirt if they ever come back to Goodison.
Vacant numbers: 2, 12, 15, 16, 17, 18
Formerly held by: Ryan Fredericks, Joe Lewis, Michael Madl, Oliver Norwood, Rui Fonte, Ben Pringle.
Despite signing an entirely new back four in the summer, none of Fulham’s recruits could be persuaded to take the No.2 shirt. We’re not sure if 12 has been retired in Joe Lewis’ name but the goalkeeper has been gone for two-and-a-half years now.
Vacant numbers: 3, 4, 13, 14, 16, 17
Formerly held by: Scott Malone, Dean Whitehead, Joel Coleman, Ramadan Sobhi, Jack Payne, Rajiv van La Parra.
Shinji Okazaki can take his pick if he moves because, just like his defence, there are holes everywhere in David Wagner’s squad list. Sorry Winty.
Vacant numbers: 13, 16, 19
Formerly held by: Ahmed Musa, Filip Benkovic, Islam Slimani.
Good, solid 1-11 work by Claude Puel but almost £45million worth of strikers have left 13 and 19 vacant. At least the Foxes got some cash back for Ahmed Musa, but there’s little chance of Islam Slimani coming back for his No. 19 shirt.
Vacant numbers: 1, 2, 16, 17, 19
Formerly held by: Loris Karius, Nathaniel Clyne, Marko Grujic, Ragnar Klavan, Sadio Mane.
Loris Karius will be back for his No.1 jersey, just you watch. Sadio Mane stepped up from 19 to 10 in the summer, much to the delight of kids in Malawi…
This is amazing. Look how happy these orphans in Malawi are to receive their Sadio Mane Liverpool shirts.

Vacant numbers: 6, 9, 11, 12, 13, 16
Formerly held by: Fernando, Nolito, Aleksandar Kolarov, Scott Sinclair, Willy Caballero, Sergio Aguero.
Sergio Aguero shifted from 16 to 10 three-and-a-half years ago but City still can’t bring themselves to fill his jersey. They could do with sticking a new holding midfielder in Fernando’s though.
Vacant numbers: 5, 19
Formerly held by: Marcos Rojo, Marcus Rashford.
Christ, how United could do with filling their No.5 shirt. Marcos Rojo left it on the peg when he swiped Michael Carrick’s No.16 instead. Marcus Rashford graduated from 19 to 10 at the start of the season, leaving the job of filling Eric Djemba-Djemba’s old jersey to someone else.
Vacant number: 16
Formerly held by: Rolando Aarons.
Rolando Aarons is back from a loan spell in the Czech Republic but he can’t reclaim his shirt until the new Premier League squads are announced. Other than that, nothing to see here. Don’t let Rafa tell you he needs players…
Vacant numbers: 8, 12, 13, 19
Formerly held by: Steven Davis, Martin Caceres, Alex McCarthy, Sofiane Boufal.
Steven Davis won’t return for his No.8 – the midfielder’s Saints deal expires at the same time his Rangers loan finishes. Presumably Manolo Gabbiadini’s No.20 will free in the not-too-distant future, too.
Vacant numbers: –
Formerly held by: –
You have to go all the way to 25 to find a spare Spurs shirt which, more than any other reason, is exactly why Mauricio Pochettino should be managing a club like Real Madrid. .
Vacant numbers: 4, 13
Formerly held by: Younes Kaboul, Molla Wague.
Younes Kaboul’s exit just before Christmas leaves a XXL shirt to fill. And, Molla Wague.
Vacant numbers: 6, 12
Formerly held by: Matthew Upson, Jordan Hugill.
West Ham couldn’t take any more of Matthew Upson flailing about in Bobby Moore’s shirt so they retired it ten years ago. Presumably Jordan Hugill’s shirt hasn’t been given the same treatment and he’ll want it back when he returns from Middlesbrough.
Vacant numbers: 1, 3, 4, 6, 12, 13, 14, 20.
Formerly held by: Carl Ikeme, Barry Douglas, David Edwards, Danny Batth, Ben Marshall, Harry Burgoyne, Bright Enobakhare, Connor Ronan.
Wolves have eight holes in their 1-20. Relegation is too good for them.
