Lionel Messi will return to Barcelona one day, according to former teammate Cesc Fabregas.

Messi left the club in the summer after over 750 appearances, 672 goals and 32 trophies with the Spanish giants as he became one of the greatest footballers in history.

Could Lionel Messi *actually* only do it at Barcelona?

The 34-year-old also won seven Ballon D’or titles with the club.

However, due to the financial mess at Barcelona, they were unable to give him a new deal and he joined French side Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.

However, former Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder Fabregas believes he will eventually return to the club.

Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Fabregas claimed: “Barcelona is everything to Messi. His time now in Paris is a passing phase, but he will return one day. He is grateful to the club of his life.”

The Argentine has struggled to hit the heights expected of him at PSG, scoring just two league goals to go with five in the Champions League. He also missed a penalty in the 1-0 win over Real Madrid on Tuesday but Fabregas has warned against writing him off already.

“I remember the first year of Luis Enrique in which he was criticised a lot. A crisis of all that was made. Then Barça won the treble. Now something similar can happen.

“I understand that programs have to be sold, but we are talking about a player who can leave you portrayed in a second. With Messi you always have to be careful, just in case. He has rope for a while.”

Another former teammate, Sergio Aguero, who played with Messi with the Argentina national side, also leaped to his defence after his penalty miss earlier this week.

Aguero told followers on his Twitch stream: “Leo played well, he broke lines. I’m not saying that because he’s a friend, but because he played hard. He was good and very active.

“In France, magazines and newspapers killed him. They are a**holes. I had an interview scheduled with a French magazine, but I said: ‘No, because I support Leo Messi. Period. So goodbye, see you soon.’ Now I’m angry.”
