Former England international Danny Mills has suggested that he is “surprised” that Brighton’s Ben White is signing for Arsenal, as he is “better than that”.

White enjoyed a stellar debut season in the Premier League with Brighton in 2020/21. This came after he helped Leeds United achieve promotion back to the top flight in 2019/20.

The defender’s form for Brighton led to him making his England debut this year and he was part of Gareth Southgate’s squad for the tournament.

White is edging closer to secure his £50m move to Arsenal. Mills has been speaking about this move with talkSPORT.

The former England international is “surprised” that Manchester United did not come in for White:

“The only thing I am surprised at is Ben White has gone to Arsenal.

“Let’s assume that he will be at Arsenal for two or three years at least before he goes somewhere else. I just think he is better than that.

When asked why White would sign for someone else, Mills said: “Because has got a better chance of winning things. What is he going to win at Arsenal? League Cup, if he is lucky. Maybe the FA Cup.

“I think he is an exceptional player and I think he is a fantastic signing for Arsenal. I am just a little bit surprised that Manchester United, who are looking for a centre-half, hasn’t come in for him.”

Last month, Arsenal legend David Seaman insisted that White has got “everything” needed to thrive with the Gunners:

“He’s got everything [needed] to go and take hold of it and give it his best shot.

“He’s got the physique, he’s got the temperament. At Leeds it’s a high-press, high-tempo game, so his fitness is also not in doubt.

“The only question mark you can put on him is can he play in the big games? But we’ll just have to wait and see, because he’s not played in them yet.

“Hopefully he will go on and play for England and when he does that, hopefully he will carry on [with his development].

“Would he be a good signing for Arsenal? Of course he would because he’s a good player.”
