Ex-Gunner picks out the Man Utd reject Arsenal should have signed

Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith insists Arsene Wenger should have signed ex-Manchester United centre-back Jonny Evans when the Gunners were linked with him.

Evans was at West Bromwich Albion when Arsenal were linked with the Northern Irishman, but the Baggies kept hold of Evans until he signed for Leicester City in the summer of 2018.

Leicester are aiming to widen the six-point gap between them and Arsenal when they meet on Saturday and Smith bemoaned Wenger’s choice to shelve his interest in Evans, reports Metro.

He told the Telegraph: “So much attention falls on the attacking vibrancy of Jamie Vardy, Youri Tielemans, James Maddison and all, but Leicester have only conceded eight goals this season, the division’s joint-best record, thanks largely to a settled defence marshalled by the excellent Jonny Evans.

“I remember when Arsene Wenger considered buying the centre-half, only to head in another direction.

“For me, it’s not so much about the quality of defender, more the lack of organisation in terms of shape.”
