Former Liverpool man Pedro Chirivella speaks on Klopp

Former Liverpool youngster Pedro Chirivella has suggested that he “absolutely does not regret” leaving the club after Jurgen Klopp encouraged him to do so.

Chirivella spent a few years at Spanish side Valencia as a youth player. This was before he joined Liverpool in 2013.

The 24-year-old only ended up playing eleven times for the English side between 2015 and 2020.

Each Premier League club’s greatest loan signing

The midfielder had spells on loan in the Eredivisie during his time at Liverpool as he played for Go Ahead Eagles and Willem II.

With first team chances hard to come by, Chirivella left Liverpool on a permanent basis last year. He joined French side Nantes on a free transfer after his contract expired.

French outlet So Foot (as cited by Sport Witness) quote Chirivella saying that Klopp told him “to go” for this move:

“I wanted change. When Nantes came, Christian Gourcuff spoke to me. He trusted me a lot. When I spoke of the possibility to Klopp, he told me to go for it, that Ligue 1 had a strong future potential.

“Those words stuck in my head. I made that choice, and today, I absolutely do not regret it.”

Liverpool host Arsenal at Anfield this weekend. Ahead of that game, Klopp suggested that the Gunners were always going to “come back”.

Mikel Arteta’s side are unbeaten in eight games in the Premier League. This run of results has seen them rise up to fifth in the table. They are now just two points and a place behind Liverpool.

Klopp said: “If you win the game [of the season], everyone asks ‘can you win the league’, but if you lose, your directly in the relegation battle.

“Obviously with Arsenal, there was never a chance they would stay where they were at the start of the season, so it was always clear they would come back.

“The way they came back is not normal because they have had an incredible round of results. They are good, but they know they were lucky in one or two games that could’ve been different.

“But we are not surprised that Arsenal are a really good football team – but we have to make sure people remember we are a good football team as well.”
