Former Newcastle United defender Steve Howey believes Dan Burn can earn an England call-up if he ‘impresses the media’.

The 29-year-old joined the Magpies in the January transfer window for a reported £13.5m from Brighton.

He has made an instant impact at St James’ Park as Eddie Howe’s side climb up the table following a torrid start to the season.

Burn joined with Newcastle bottom of the Premier League but he is yet to taste defeat in black and white, with his new side now 14th in the table.

The World Cup takes place in Qatar this year, and if Burn keeps performing well, an England call-up will come, according to Howey.

“I was very happy when we were linked with him and more than happy when we got him,” Howey told BBC Newcastle’s Total Sport (via Chronicle Live).

“I think he is a good player, and if he keeps his form up and Newcastle keep on doing what they are doing, I don’t think Gareth can really not take him.

“Do I think it’s too quick for him to get into the squad for the World Cup? Possibly. But you just never know, you see players that all of a sudden come to the fore and managers can pull somebody out of the hat.

“I think he’s doing fantastically well, I’m delighted for him. He just has to keep on doing what he’s doing, and impress the media even though we’re up in Newcastle.

“It still tends to be that southern teams where players get mentioned. I think it will take care of itself, he just needs to continue doing what he’s doing.”

Meanwhile, Newcastle are ‘above all’ in the race to sign Victor Osimhen from Napoli and are ‘ready to go crazy’ to beat their competition, according to NapoliCalcio.

Osimhen has scored 21 goals in 52 appearances for the Serie A side having joined in a £67.5m deal from Lille in the summer of 2020.
