Former Stoke City defender Ryan Shawcross has announced his retirement at the age of 34.

Shawcross came through Manchester United’s academy. His only senior appearances for them came in the League Cup.

The defender joined Stoke City on loan in 2007 before his deal was made permanent in January 2008. He went onto play over 450 times for them across all competitions.

Shawcross spent a total of 14 years at Stoke. During his time there, his form earned him his only England cap in 2012.

He left them earlier this year as he signed for David Beckham’s Inter Miami.

The England international suffered a season-ending injury in August and he has decided that this is the right time to retire.

He told intermiamucf.com: “Despite stepping out of my playing career due to injury, my passion for the game is still intact.

“After having secured my coaching licences, I am looking forward to pursuing a career in coaching.

“I would like to thank the whole Inter Miami CF organisation and fan base for the opportunity they’ve provided me to come here, I would also like to thank the Stoke City fans for their support.

“Last but not least, thank my wife and my kids for being a pillar throughout my life.”
