Ex-United defender blames Mourinho for overspend on Maguire

Paul Parker insists Manchester United did not need to spend a huge sum on Harry Maguire in the summer.

Maguire set United back around £80million when he moved from Leicester before the start of a season in which the Red Devils have again struggled.

The England defender has done “okay” says Parker, but the ex-right-back did not see any need to spend such a huge sum on a defender, despite United’s defence being a mess last season.

Parker pins the blame on Jose Mourinho.

“Maguire has done okay,” he told Bet O’Clock. “He has not stood out for me and for the money that United paid for him, he has not earned that.

“You look at someone like Virgil Van Dijk, who has absolutely been value for money, and you would go as far to say that he has exceeded that.

“I don’t think they needed to spend that money on Maguire. They got pressured into getting him from the previous manger when they did not need to spend that type of money.

“United were also pressured into getting rid of Chris Smalling which has now been deemed as a mistake considering how well he is doing at Roma.”
