Here are the 20 most in-form sides in Europe’s top five leagues over the last 10 matches…

 

1) Atletico Madrid

Points: 26

Atletico have kept a ridiculous eight clean sheets while making an unbeaten start to the La Liga season. With only two goals against, they have equalled the lowest number of goals conceded for this stage in any La Liga season. Diego Simeone’s side are already six points clear of Real with a game in hand while Barcelona trail them by a dozen points.

 

2) AC Milan

Points: 26

Only one Milan team, the 1955/56 side, have won more matches by this point in a Serie A season than Stefano Pioli’s men. Powered by Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s 10 goals in eight of those matches, the Rossoneri are four points clear of Inter.

 

3) Paris Saint-Germain

Points: 25

PSG are top of Ligue Un, as you would expect, but Thomas Tuchel’s side haven’t been in top form. Having lost their first two games of the season, they capitulated to Monaco a fortnight ago then drew with Bordeaux. Tuchel’s primary focus may be on the Champions League, but between huge games against Man Utd and Istanbul Basaksehir, they returned to winning ways domestically with a 3-1 win at Montpellier.

 

4) Tottenham

Points: 24

Spurs haven’t been beaten since the opening day of the season. On their way to an inevitable title triumph, of the big six rivals they have faced so far, only Manchester United have scored against them. And that was a penalty. In a 6-1 win. Jose is absolutely in his element.

 

5) Bayern Munich

Points: 23

No team in Europe’s top five leagues has scored more than Bayern but Hansi Flick’s Treble winners have been leaky at the back, with only Manchester United on this list having conceded more goals.

Points: 23

La Real could have gone back to the top of La Liga on Sunday night but they were held by 10-man Alaves and Imanol Alguacil’s side, featuring David Silva and Adnan Januzaj, now trail Atletico by a point having played two games more.

 

7) Lyon

After a five-game winless streak at the start of the season, Lyon have hit form with four consecutive wins before they travel to PSG on Sunday night.

 

8) Bayer Leverkusen

After opening the campaign with three draws, Leverkusen climbed to second in the Bundesliga after continuing their unbeaten start to the season with a 3-0 win at Schalke on Sunday.

 

9) Napoli

Points: 21

One of Napoli’s defeats came in the form of a forfeit when covid prevented them from facing Juventus. But Gennaro Gattuso’s side have filed an appeal – their third – and if successful, they could belatedly face Juve next month.

 

10) Inter Milan

Points: 21

Antonio Conte’s side have got back on track, domestically at least, with a three-game winning streak ending a run of five games which reaped only a single victory. In Serie A they have been beaten only once, but that defeat came in the Milan derby, which leaves them five points off their San Siro cohabitants.

 

11) RB Leipzig

Points: 21

Julian Nagelsmann’s men are two-thirds of the way through a huge week, bookended by Champions League assignments. In the middle of facing Istanbul Basaksehir, Leipzig held Bayern in Munich but dropped to third in Bundesliga, which seems harsh.

 

12) Liverpool

Despite everything and everyone conspiring against them, if Jurgen Klopp is to be believed, Liverpool sit level with Spurs at the top of the league, with their home form still ridiculous. As Daniel Storey points out, In the Premier League, the Reds have dropped four points in their last 40 games at Anfield.

Andrea Pirlo has become the first coach to go unbeaten in his first 10 Serie A matches in charge since three points for a win was introduced. Though that stat does include a Napoli forfeit.

Despite having won only two of their last six, Christophe Galtier’s side sit in second place in Ligue Un though Lyon trail them only having conceded two more goals.

 

16) Chelsea

Having shot themselves in the foot against Liverpool 10 games ago, then again against Southampton and West Brom in the fortnight after, Frank Lampard’s side have addressed their defensive flaws and have now conceded only two goals in 11 games in all competitions. Title-winning consistency, that.

 

17) Borussia Dortmund

Lucien Favre’s side sit in fourth place in Bundesliga with only two wins from their last six in all competitions. In the league, it’s one win in four after five wins in six to start the season.

 

18) Sassuolo

Points: 19

Sassuolo briefly topped Serie A after beating Verona two games ago but their first defeat of the season to Inter Milan coupled with a 0-0 draw at Roma has seen Roberto De Zerbi’s side drop to fifth. Still, they trail second-placed Inter only by a couple of points.

 

19) Real Madrid

Zinedine Zidane is in the midst of a week-long assessment for his own job. It started well at Sevilla on Saturday. Now for Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League before they face Atletico in the Madrid derby on Sunday. Still, it could be worse. At least they aren’t Barcelona.
