Buzzing Brentford among Europe’s top 10 in-form sides

Ian Watson

Brentford have had a fine start to their maiden season in the premier League. So fine that their form over their last 10 matches in all competitions puts them among Europe’s elite.

Here are the top 10 sides in Europe’s top five leagues based on each club’s last 10 games in all competitions….

10) Brentford – 2.1ppg

Current league position: 7th

Your Milans, your PSGs, your Liverpools, your Bayerns, your Brentfords…obviously. For the record, over the last 10 matches in all competitions, the Bees have a better record than Man City (13th), Real Madrid (14th), Juventus (17th) and Man Utd (30th).

9) Inter Milan – 2.1ppg
W6 D3 L1
F27 A10 GD17
Current league position: 3rd

No Antonio Conte, no Romelu Lukaku, no real problem. Except in the Champions League. Inter were garbage in Europe last season and they’ve started poorly again, failing to score in a draw and a defeat. In Serie A, however, the champions are undefeated even if a couple of 2-2 draws with Sampdoria and Atalanta leave them four points off Napoli.

8) AC Milan – 2.2ppg
W7 D1 L2
F20 A10 GD10
Current league position: 2nd

Like Inter, Milan are flying domestically, having won six of their seven Serie A games and drawn the other, but after a seven-season absence, the Rossoneri have lost both their Champions League matches so far, each by a single goal to Liverpool and Atletico. Not a bad start, certainly in the context of their early-season injury problems.

7) Chelsea – 2.2ppg
W7 D1 L2
F21 A8 GD13
Current league position: 1st

A ropey few days last week when Chelsea lost to Man City and Juve sees the Blues lose ground on the leaders in this list. But they’re still top of the Premier League by a point, and their seven victories includes the Champions League final, so that’s not bad, it it?

6) Napoli – 2.3ppg
W7 D2 L1
F23 A9 GD14
Current league position: 1st

Napoli remain perfect in Serie A, with seven wins from seven matches. Their only defeat of the season came to Spartak Moscow in the Europa League last week. Three more victories will see them equal Roma’s 2013/14 record of 10 wins at the start of a Serie A season.

5) Roma – 2.4ppg
W8 D0 L2
F27 A9 GD18
Current league position: 4th

Jose Mourinho doing Jose Mourinho things at the start of a new reign but even the Giallorossi diehards must know to enjoy it while it lasts. The two defeats under Mourinho were both by 3-2 scorelines, in the Rome derby and the week before at Hellas Verona when it took this thunderb*stard to inflict upon the new coach his first loss as Roma boss…

4) Liverpool – 2.4ppg
W7 D3 L0
F28 A9 GD19
Current league position: 2nd

The Reds remain the only unbeaten team on this list, with just themselves and Freiburg in Europe’s top five leagues yet to taste defeat in all competitions this season.

3) Paris Saint-Germain – 2.5ppg
W8 D1 L1
F23 A9 GD14
Current league position: 1st

PSG’s defeat at 11th-placed Rennes last weekend, when Messi, Neymar, Mbappe and Di Maria all failed to muster a single shot on target, has cost them top spot on this list. Still, they already have a six-point cushion at the top of Ligue 1.

2) Bayer Leverkusen – 2.5ppg
W8 D1 L1
F29 A8 GD21
Current league position: 2nd

Leverkusen currently trail Bayern at the top of Bundesliga only on goal difference, with Gerardo Castro’s men hosting the leaders in the first game back after the international break. Probably won’t be long before Florian Wirtz is swapping sides

1) Bayern Munich – 2.7ppg
W9 D0 L1
F46 A7 GD39
Current league position: 1st

Bayern would have been perfect had they not suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday – their first home defeat in 31 matches and Frankfurt’s first win at Bayern in 21 years.
