Newcastle United are ‘preparing a bid’ for Wolfsburg midfielder Felix Nmecha and are ready to compete with Liverpool for the signature of another midfield player, according to reports.

Nmecha and his older brother, Lukas, were born in Germany before moving to England at a young age and both players were on Manchester City’s books until 2021 when they joined Wolfsburg.

Felix is a combative midfielder, whereas Lukas is a forward and cost the German club a fee in the region of €8million after four loan spells, while the younger of the two cost them nothing and did not spend any time out on loan while at City.

The younger of the two is now attracting interest from the Premier League after playing twice in the competition during his time with the reigning champions.

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle are looking to bring Nmecha to St James’ Park in a move that has come ‘out of the blue’.

Eddie Howe is looking to get his summer business underway with the signing of the German international, who is worth around £15m.

Despite the news coming out of nowhere, it is now said the Magpies have been monitoring the 22-year-old for ‘several months’ with ‘value for money signings in the Bundesliga’ something the club’s recruitment team has been focusing on.

Nmecha would be a bargain signing having also been linked with Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund, though the report states Newcastle aim to sign ‘two elite players’ this summer.

Another midfielder Newcastle are interested in signing is Nice’s Khephren Thuram, who is also a top target for Liverpool.

Thuram represents a ‘more expensive option’ with Nice expected to ask for around £30m.

Meanwhile, Italian journalist Rudy Galetti has said the Magpies are interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Manu Kone.

Kone is obviously another Bundesliga midfield player and someone Liverpool are tracking.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Galetti said competition for Kone’s signature will be “fierce” with the Geordies also keen.

“In the race for Manu, there is not only Liverpool,” he explained.

“The French midfielder is also on the radar of Newcastle, PSG and Chelsea even if more underground, so the competition for him will be fierce in the next weeks.”

Newcastle’s top transfer target is reportedly James Maddison, who was relegated with Leicester City last month.

Leicester are believed to be asking for a fee in the region of £50m and amidst Financial Fair Play fears, Newcastle are hoping they can land him for cheaper, especially given Tottenham’s interest.
