Rio Ferdinand has made his feelings clear on David De Gea as the goalkeeper has announced his departure from Manchester United.

The goalkeeper’s future had been up in the air for quite some time as his contract was allowed to run down at Old Trafford.

De Gea himself took to social media to announce his departure, following 12 years with the club.

“I would like to express my unwavering gratitude and appreciation for the love from the last 12 years. We’ve achieved a lot since my dear Sir Alex Ferguson brought me to this club,” De Gea wrote.

“I took incredible pride every time I pulled on this shirt, to lead the team, to represent this institution, the biggest club in the world was an honour only bestows upon a few lucky footballers.

“Now, it’s the right time to undertake a new challenge, to push myself again in new surroundings.”

While De Gea’s exit was no real surprise, United have been criticised for how they have handled the whole situation.

Ferdinand has made his feelings clear on the situation as he is disappointed to see De Gea leaving under a cloud.

“There’s a lot of people calling for him to leave and that’s understandable and fair. I’m just a little bit gutted with how the club have handled this,” Ferdinand told the FIVE YouTube channel.

“It comes down to communication. I’m seeing more and more players leave with a sour taste and it’s not right. I don’t think it’s fair on the player.”

“David must be sitting there and thinking, ‘I never dreamed that I would leave the club in this way, in this manner’.”

The Spanish goalkeeper made over 500 appearances for the club and won seven trophies during his time in Manchester.

As De Gea has now said his goodbyes, United are expected to ramp up their interest in Inter’s Andre Onana.

According to Fabrizio Romano, a deal is close to being finalised for the 27-year-old.

“Manchester United have improved their bid for Andre Onana. It’s now worth €50m add-ons included, around €45m plus €5m add-ons,” Romano tweeted.

“Inter always asked for €60m package — but sources believe €55m could be the right number to make it happen.”
