Ferdinand tells Mbappe to move to Man Utd as PSG are savaged by the French media
Former Man Utd defender Rio Ferdinand thinks Kylian Mbappe should leave Paris Saint-Germain and move to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window.
The Ligue 1 giants lost 2-0 on the night – and 3-0 on aggregate – to Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the Champions League with former PSG striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scoring the opening goal of the game before Serge Gnabry added another late on.
Bayern’s defensive resilience in Europe this season – this was their seventh clean sheet in eight matches – meant even a side featuring Mbappe and Lionel Messi faltered as PSG failed to get past the last 16 stage for the fifth time in seven years.
And the French media did not hold back on their assessment of their performance with L’Equipe columnist Vincent Duluc hitting out on the state of the club.
Duluc wrote: “There is no reason for the greatest players in the world to come to Paris for anything other than a better contract than elsewhere, and no reason, either, for the average players not to continue to die there.”
He added: “At PSG, when the knockout stages of the Champions League come, defeat is a culture.”
L’Equipe gave Mbappe a 3 out of 10 rating for his display in Germany and Man Utd legend Ferdinand thinks the France international needs to leave Ligue 1 for a “more competitive league” and Old Trafford could be the right destination.
Ferdinand said on BT Sport: “He’s the most devastating player to watch on the planet right now. I love watching him.
“I think to go to the next level, he needs to go to a more competitive league. I think as much as he’s been great for PSG and they’ve been great for him, he’s won the World Cup and now he’ll want to win the Champions League and I don’t see that happening there.
“[He should move to] Man United! The Premier League is the best, most entertaining league in the world, the most competitive league in the world 100%.
“I’d love to see him come here – but nowhere else but Man United if he comes to England!”
On whether he would sign Mbappe or Harry Kane in the summer transfer window, Ferdinand added: “Oh 100% Mbappe. I think even Kane would say Mbappe as well.
“He’s young, he’s beginning to get towards his peak years. He’s not even there yet and he’s already scored more than 200 goals for PSG, won a World Cup and been top scorer at a World Cup.”
Fellow pundit Peter Crouch continued: “He is in a league that’s below the standard that he’s set.
“He’s been unbelievable for France, he’s done fantastically well, PSG’s record goalscorer already, so I think the time has come to try it in a top league: either Spain or England.
“Let’s be honest. he can pick any club he wants. I think the rumblings and the rumours around Real Madrid don’t seem to be going away. He’s been attached to them for a long time but of course Liverpool are the other option for him!”
