Bruno Fernandes says you could see by his team-mates’ celebrations that they were happy for Man Utd defender Harry Maguire after scoring against Leeds.

Skipper Maguire headed home from United’s 140th top-flight corner to put Ralf Rangnick’s side on their way to a 4-2 victory at Leeds on Sunday as they became the last Premier League team to score from a corner this season.

It ended an incredible run which England defender Maguire described as “embarrassing”, although Raphael Varane saw his effort from a free-kick disallowed in the 1-1 draw at Burnley earlier this month.

Ralf Rangnick was forced to confirm that former Sheffield United defender Maguire will continue to captain Man Utd for the rest of the season.

Maguire has been below par of late and reports on Friday suggested he could be removed from the role as skipper, with Cristiano Ronaldo instead donning the armband for the remainder of the campaign.

The United defender denied that on social media and interim manager Rangnick backed his skipper ahead of the victory over Leeds.

On the latest dressing room noise, Fernandes told reporters on Tuesday: “I don’t know. I don’t know what people mean to that.

“I was doing an interview now and they asked me about Jadon Sancho doing my celebration. I don’t think that’s something that’s going in different ways. I saw the goal of H [Maguire] and I see Paul running behind him, sliding on his knees, happy for him.

“I was slapping his head, saying finally you’ve scored a goal with that big head. I think honestly, it’s just people trying to complain. We know when someone talks about this club, they go around the world with their voice and that’s something they want. For us, it means nothing.”

On their confidence, Fernandes added: “I think the team has been playing well even in the games we didn’t win. Obviously when you don’t get the result, it’s not perfect. Winning games, you feel more confident.

“Going into this game, which is an important one, obviously we know that having that confidence of winning games gives you something more to be prepared for the game. If we stick from the plan from the first to the last minute, we can win the game.”
