The likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe are all up for the award, along with more surprising names like Hugo Lloris and Marquinhos.
Paris Saint-Germain winger Neymar is regarded by many as the third-best player in the world, behind Messi and Ronaldo.
But France Football, the publication that presents the Ballon d’Or, omitted the Brazilian from their shortlist this year and have detailed eight reasons why in the timeline below:
January 23 – Metatarsal injury
March 6 – Abusing match official after Man Utd match
April 27 – Pushing a supporter
June 6 – Ankle injury ahead of Copa America
August 9 – Cleared of rape allegation
Transfer window – Failed move to Barcelona
September 14 – Jeered by PSG fans
October 13 – Another injury on international duty
It seems issues both on and off the pitch – injuries, transfer speculation and his own infidelities – have led to his exclusion.
