Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez celebrates saving a penalty

France have made a formal complaint about Emiliano Martinez’s conduct during their World Cup final defeat on penalties to Argentina.

The Argentina goalkeeper has come in for a lot of criticism for his actions during the penalty shootout as his side triumphed 4-2 to lift the World Cup.

Martinez did everything he could to put off the French penalty takers with the World Cup Golden Glove winner pulling off two saves in the shootout.

After saving from Kingsley Coman, Martinez threw the ball away from Aurelien Tchouameni as he prepared for his spot-kick, with the France midfielder dragging his effort wide of the post.

But his sh*thousery did not end there with Martinez mocking Kylian Mbappe on Argentina’s celebratory bus tour with the goalkeeper holding a doll with the France forward’s face on it.

Martinez was also filmed calling for a minute’s silence for Mbappe in the Argentina dressing room after the final whistle and France FA president Noel Le Graet has revealed how he has complained in writing to Claudio Tapia.

Le Graet told Ouest-France: “I wrote to my counterpart from the Argentine Federation, I find these excesses abnormal, in the context of a sports competition, and I find it difficult to understand. This is going too far. Mbappe’s behaviour has been exemplary.”

And Martinez delivered a fresh taunt this week with the Argentina goalkeeper saying Tchouameni “screwed up everything” for France.

Addressing his hometown of Mar del Plata, Martinez insisted: “When I saved the first penalty in the final, I knew that the other boy was going to be very nervous.

“I tried to play him mentally by throwing the ball away, talking to him… And he missed the goal, he screwed up everything.”

Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton has called Martinez’s attempts to put off France midfielder Tchouameni during the shootout as “despicable”.

Sutton told the Daily Mail: “I wasn’t overly enamoured with Martinez’s antics in the shootout.

“I thought it was a pretty despicable thing to do (throwing the ball away). I can understand the mind games and heat of the moment you do whatever it takes.

“But I thought that was totally unnecessary. If you’re Tchouameni walking past Martinez (in the guard of honour) you probably feel like biffing him one.

“I didn’t like that at all but I can understand Martinez in that moment trying to win a World Cup.

“But he didn’t just chuck it a couple of yards away, he launched it 15, 20 yards away. I really felt for Tchouameni in that moment.

“That wasn’t on. It would have been interesting if Martinez had been booked for that because he got one on the next penalty.”
