FT: Man City 2-0 Southampton

Date published: Thursday 1st January 1970 12:00 -

FULL-TIME! MAN CITY 2-0 SOUTHAMPTON: That’s it… Lampard is given man of the match as City round off a disappointing season on a high. Lampard bows out in predicatbly classy style, as Southampton record their highest-ever Premier League finish in seventh. They must hope Arsenal beat Aston Villa in Saturday’s FA Cup final to secure a Europa League qualifying spot.
MAN CITY 2-0 SOTON: Lampard is given the man of the match award, another chance for the City fans to give him a standing ovation.
MAN CITY 2-0 SOTON: Three minutes added on at the Etihad…
GOAL AGUERO! MAN CITY 2-0 SOUTHAMPTON! That’s it, and fitting for the Premier League top scorer to get the second. Mangala’s header across the box finds the Argentine at the back post to apply the finish with another header. It hasn’t been his day up to now, but he couldn’t miss from two yards out. His 26th of the season in the league.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: CHANCE! Corner to City on the right, Navas takes, it falls to Aguero at the far post, but his left-footed effort is blocked and cleared.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: Bony has a go from 30 yards, but it flies over Davis’ bar.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: Saints with all the questions in the latter stages. Mane is ruling the right-hand side, but City are just about keeping the visitors out.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: Milner now off for Kompany… another standing ovation from the Etihad crowd. It could be goodbye, with his contract up in the summer.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: Lampard is off! The Premier League legend makes way to a standing ovation from the Etihad Stadium crowd… and he could even end up with the winner. Jesus Navas comes on.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: CLOSE! Bony finds Aguero on the right, but from a slight angle the Argentine half-volleys a yard over the bar.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: Saints chance – Davis off for Elia.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: Doesn’t look too good for James Milner… he is down in a heap and Jesus Navas is warming up. It looked like Lampard was about to be brought off.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: CHANCE! Double chance for Southampton… Bertrand finds the unmarked Mane at the back post, but his header lacks the power and falls into the hands of Hart. Then, Long breaks clear on the left, but his low, left-footed effort is easily saved.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: Silva’s deft touch to Aguero is cut out, but it falls back to Spaniard, only for him to blaze well over the bar.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: Ward-Prowse piles forward, and the ball drops to Long running onto the ball 20 yards out, but his low, placed effort is saved by Hart.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: Toure off, Bony on. This could be the last time we see Yaya Toure in a City shirt… and he is given a standing ovation by the City fans. One or two supporters ‘waving’ the Ivorian off.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: Corner to Southampton on the left… but City deal with it. The game is opening up, but Bony looks to be coming on for City.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: Saints take too attempts to clear a Kolarov corner, and the game has become slightly bitty as we enter the final third.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: Pelle offside again! Mane does superbly well to find space, but his pass to the Italian finds him beyond the last man again. Frustrating for Saints.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: Change for Saints… Djuricic off for James Ward-Prowse.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: City calming down a tad now. Milner’s left-footed cross to the far post finds Lampard, but his header is straight at Davis.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: Pelle hits the post! But he is denied by an offside flag anyway. Good trap from City.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: Saints win the ball from Lampard high up the pitch, the ball finds its way to Bertrand on the left, but his ball is too high and fizzes over the waiting Saints players.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: Aguero’s lovely backheel finds Lampard near the penalty spot, but he can’t get the ball from under his feet.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: Milner and Silva combine down the left, but Saints clear well. At the other end, some nifty footwork from Hart gets him out of a pickle.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: Back underway at the Etihad…
HALF-TIME – MAN CITY 1-0 SOUTHAMPTON: The Frank Lampard show so far… but City should perhaps be three or four up given the number of chances top scorer Sergio Aguero has missed. Saints still pushing, but City controlling so far.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: CLOSE! The ball drops to Pelle on the edge of the area, but Milner does just enough to put him off and his effort goes just wide.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: City knocking the ball about with ease… but Saints aren’t letting them reach the final third. Kolarov’s low ball is cleared.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: Mane does superbly at the byline to get past Demichelis… but the ball just runs out of play.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: SAVE! Yaya Toure piles forward to get the crowd going… he centres for Aguero, and Alderweireld’s touch is cleared by the diving save of Davis!
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: Kolarov has a pop from 25 yards, but it flies wide of Davis’ goal.
MAN CITY 1-0 SOTON: CHANCE! Aguero misses another guild-edge chance for City… he’s through on goal, more central than the earlier chance, but again he can’t beat Davis. Should have scored.
GOAL MAN CITY! LAMPARD SCORES! Who else? He’s going to bow out in style with a trademark finish. Milner gets the ball on the right, drills a low cross into the penalty spot for Lampard to convert.
MAN CITY 0-0 SOTON: Silva gets freedom down the left… he cuts inside, but his low cross can’t be turned in by Mangala inside the six-yard box.
MAN CITY 0-0 SOTON: Much more open game now. City break through Aguero, who offloads to Milner, and they earn a corner on the right. Saints clear the danger…
MAN CITY 0-0 SOTON: Saints are split open and Long has to foul Milner from behind to stop the break.
MAN CITY 0-0 SOTON: CHANCE! How has Aguero not scored? Davis parries a low Yaya Toure effort into Aguero’s path, four yards out and with Davis on the floor… but he hits it straight at the goalkeeper.
MAN CITY 0-0 SOTON: CHANCE! At the other end, Aguero is put through on the right by Silva as City break, but he slices his effort high and wide from a slight angle.
MAN CITY 0-0 SOTON: SAVE! Best chance of the game so far… Long does well to nip the ball over Zabaleta’s slide challenge, and has Hart to beat, but his low effort to his left is saved well by England’s No 1.
MAN CITY 0-0 SOTON: Free-kick to City on the left, but for some reason they take it short and go back 30 yards. The Etihad crowd relatively impatient at that…
MAN CITY 0-0 SOTON: City with all the ball in Saints’ half, but the visitors defence looking as strong as it has all season.
MAN CITY 0-0 SOTON: Hart has started nervously for City. He has a slight mix up with Zabaleta, and has booted the ball out of play twice.
MAN CITY 0-0 SOTON: City get some joy down the right, giving Kolarov time and space to cross, but on both occasions Saints clear.
MAN CITY 0-0 SOTON: Free-kick to Saints near the right corner flag from Mangala’s foul on Djuricic. Davis crosses, and Fonte rises highest, but his glancing touch isn’t good enough.
MAN CITY 0-0 SOTON: Corner to City, who are being patient. Milner plays a one-two with Silva, but Saints clear the eventual drilled cross.
MAN CITY 0-0 SOTON: Aguero dropping very deep to receive the ball, and City have Saints camped in their own half now.
MAN CITY 0-0 SOTON: First sign of City clicking… good interchange from Zabaleta and Silva, but the attack breaks down.
MAN CITY 0-0 SOTON: City have hardly had a touch here… Bertrand ghosts past Silva, but his dangerous delivery is just above Long.
MAN CITY 0-0 SOTON: Poor start for Demichelis… he picks up a yellow for bringing down Djuricic on the left. Dangerous free-kick position, but Davis’ cross is punched clear by Hart.
MAN CITY 0-0 SOTON: Corner for Saints from the off as Mangala clears. Davis’ set piece is cleared by Mangala and then Aguero as City come out…
MAN CITY 0-0 SOTON: And they’re off!
The teams are out at the Etihad…
STATS: City are the only team not to draw 0-0 this season. They are almost certain to be the top scoring team in the Premier League for the third time in the last four campaigns.
MERSE PREDICTS: 3-1 – Southampton had an unbelievable result last week but I can’t see them beating Manchester City, who will want to finish on a high. They have been disappointing this season by being complacent and inconsistent. There will be changes this summer there; if you keep doing the same things you’ll keep getting the same results.
STATS: Manchester City have won their last three Premier League home games against Southampton, this after losing the three beforehand.
Fancy a flutter? With Manchester City assured of second place, the onus is on Southampton to fight for the points in order to challenge Liverpool and Tottenham for fifth place. The Saints are 100/30 to finish higher than their current position of seventh, so the odds are against them, but they can put pressure on their rivals elsewhere by scoring in the first 10 minutes at the Etihad (8/1).
City will finish second as they relinquish their title to Chelsea, with speculation rife over the future of Manuel Pellegrini at the club.
No Survival Sunday antics here for these two sides at the right end of the table, but plenty to play for for Southampton, who could go as high as fifth with a win. Seventh will get them Europa League football, however, as long as Aston Villa do not win the FA Cup final next weekend against Arsenal.
Southampton: Kelvin Davis, Clyne, Fonte, Alderweireld, Bertrand, Wanyama, Steven Davis, Long, Djuricic, Mane, Pelle – Subs: Yoshida, Gardos, Ward-Prowse, Elia, Gazzaniga, Reed, Targett
Man City: Hart, Zabaleta, Demichelis, Mangala, Kolarov, Fernandinho, Lampard (C), Milner, Toure, Silva, Aguero – Subs: Sagna, Kompany, Dzeko, Caballero, Bony, Jesus Navas, Jovetic.
