Gary Neville has offered a response to stinging criticism of Manchester from the wife of Angel di Maria.
Jorgelina Cardoso referred to the city as “a sh*thole” earlier this week in condemnation of Di Maria’s 2014 move.
The winger became the most expensive player in British football history when Manchester United signed him for £59.7m, only to sell him less than a year later to PSG for closer to £45m.
Cardoso laid into the “horrible” city, the “disgusting” food and the women, who are apparently “all pasty and white, skinny, prim and proper” and “dolled up to the nines, perfectly made up”.
Neville was asked for a response to the quotes by Sky Sports interviewer Geoff Shreeves, and gave the most diplomatic answer possible.
“I don’t know what she means, Geoff!” he told Sky Sports.
“Seriously, all I would say on that is that we hear these stories from time to time, where a player’s played like a drain – Di Maria was awful – and they’ve struggled at home.
“I thought Man United had signed a brilliant player. He had great expectations.
“Maybe what he needs to do is look across the road at Sergio Aguero or Pablo Zabaleta, who have done alright in Manchester and not looked to leave.
“She did have a bad experience and an unfortunate experience with the robbery. That clouds your judgement because it is a nice city.”
