Gary Neville thought Liverpool defender Andy Robertson played like he’d “had a week on the lash” in their 4-0 loss to Manchester City on Thursday night.

Liverpool started brightly against City with Mohamed Salah testing Ederson and then hitting the post but the hosts took charge after Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring from the penalty spot on 25 minutes.

Further goals came from Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden before Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain put a Sterling shot into his own net.

It was a sobering night for the newly-crowned champions but, with a 20-point lead at the top of the table, it had no damaging impact.

Robertson has been brilliant for Liverpool all season but Neville picked him out for criticism as the Reds were unusually sloppy in defence.

Speaking during Sky Sports commentary on the game, Neville said: “He’s playing tonight like he has had a week on the lash.

“It’s so unlike him. You see him getting drawn in again. He just has to hold his nerve. He’s getting played around.

“I think it’s more a lack of concentration from Robertson, the preparation won’t have been the same.

“He looks like he’s seeing two of Foden out there. He’s done it three or four times in this first half.”
