Gerrard pities Bayern keeper over slip: ‘I’ve been there’

Steven Gerrard sympathised with Bayern Munich goalkeeper Sven Ulreich after his slip cost the Germans a place in the Champions League final.

Bayern drew 2-2 with Real Madrid in the second leg of their tie on Tuesday, losing 3-2 on aggregate.

The Germans were the stronger side over the two legs but were made to pay for their individual mistakes, with Ulreich’s slip letting in Karim Benzema to score his second goal.

James Rodriguez pulled one back against his parent club but it was not enough. Sorry Liverpool, but this trophy is Real’s.

Former Reds midfielder Gerrard was quick to show pity to Ulreich, with the slip reminding the pundit of his costly error against Chelsea in the Premier League in April 2014.

“I’ve been there when you lose your footing at a vital moment, it’s a cruel way to lose a football match,” he told BT Sport.

“Neuer hammers that 70, 80 yards down field.”
