Jose Mourinho was said to be willing to offload a couple of exiled centre-backs to fund a move for a shiny new one in January. But Everton have their sights set on the Man Utd manager’s first-choice stopper.

Apparently, the Toffees are keen to sign Chris Smalling. That’s the claim of The Sun, which reports that Marco Silva wants the former England defender on a free transfer in the summer.

Smalling is out of contract at the end of the season, but United retain the option of extending that deal for a further year. It seems certain that they will activate that option, but that won’t deter Everton. The story goes that Silva will simply move in January instead.

United triggered the extension clause in Ashley Young’s deal earlier this year. But the clock is ticking on the winger-turned-full-back’s contract which will expire in the summer.

The Sun reckons there is also interest in the 33-year-old, primarily from Roma. It is claimed the Serie A side are keen to move for Young in January but if they can’t bring him to Italy this winter, then they can at least put in place a pre-contract agreement anytime in the New Year.

Mourinho will be more willing to shift Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo off the books and, according to the Birmingham Mail, Wolves are still keen on the Argentina defender. Even if he hasn’t played a first-team game this season…

Christian Pulisic is in England right now preparing for the Wayne Rooney tribute show at Wembley tonight. So, of course, the USA forward was asked about playing in the Premier League.

“There is no reason why maybe one day I won’t play here,” said Pulisic politely. The Borussia Dortmund winger has been linked with a move to these shores since he emerged in the Bundesliga, with Liverpool the most regularly linked side.

But, according to The Guardian, it is Chelsea who are at the front of the queue for the 20-year-old, who has only one full season remaining on his Dortmund deal.

Dortmund may entertain a part-exchange deal involving Callum Hudson-Odoi. Jadon Sancho kept Pulisic out of the Dortmund XI against Bayern Munich at the weekend and his success has encouraged Dortmund to trawl England for more talent. Because it’s as simple as that…
