Gossip: City join Can race as Liverpool eye replacement

Manchester City have supposedly thrown their hat in the ring for Liverpool midfielder Emre Can.

The Germany international is out of contract in the summer and appears set to leave Anfield after so far refusing to extend his terms with the Reds.

Juventus have held a long-standing interest in Can, though former club Bayern Munich have also emerged as possible suitors. Calciomercato now claims that Can is attracting interest in this country, primarily from Manchester City.

The 23-year-old had been linked with Man Utd a few weeks ago, though that rumour had the grubby paw prints of agents all over it. City, though, are said to be keen on adding Can to the list of rival players they want to poach for nothing next summer, with Alexis Sanchez said to be at the top of it.

The story says that City will exceed Juventus’s offer of 4.5million euros per season and Pep Guardiola will promise the central midfielder a prominent role in their squad.

If, or more likely when, Can leaves, Liverpool are targeting another free German to replace him.

The Sun says Jurgen Klopp will target Leon Goretzka, who is out of contract at Schalke in the summer. They aren’t the only ones, though.

Barcelona are said to be very interested, with Schalke accepting that their hopes of keeping the Germany international are now over.

Schalke may even consider allowing him to leave in January in order to recoup a small fee, with Goretzka expected to make a swift return from a stress fracture in his lower leg.

All the clubs chasing RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano have received news of his release clause – and it’s a biggie.

Manchester United and Arsenal are among the English clubs to be chasing the centre-half, though Barcelona are also keeping on eye on the former RB Salzburg star.

Whoever is serious about the France teenager will have to prove it – they will have to pay £89million if Leipzig insist on his release clause being paid.

According to Calciomercato, United have been monitoring Upamecano for two seasons, while Milan are also sniffing.
