INTER DEFENDER ON CITY SHORTLIST
Manchester City badly need centre-backs and, apparently, they have their eye on five. Among them are Inter Milan’s in-demand defender Milan Skriniar and Mykola Matviyenko of Shakhtar Donetsk.
That’s the good word according to ORRRNNNSSSTTTEEEEEEIIIN while writing for The Athletic. Pep Guardiola is looking at midfielders for the summer – Harry Winks is among them – but City recognise their shortage of centre-backs needs addressing this month.
Skriniar would not come cheap or easy. Signing the Slovakia stopper would likely mean City having to break their £62.8million transfer record, while Matviyenko would come considerably cheaper since he has only 18 months left on his Shakhtar deal.
CANCELO TO GO ALREADY?
Pep seems to prefer spending fortunes on full-backs but the subject of his most recent splurge could already be heading for the Etihad exit.
Joao Cancelo only moved to City in the summer in a huge part-exchange deal with Juventus involving Danilo. But according to TZ in Munich, Bayern have made contact with City to ask about a possible loan move for the right-back.
SPURS TARGET LEMAR LOAN
Tottenham are another club considering a loan move for a big money flop. The subject of Jose Mourinho’s interest is Atletico Madrid attacker Thomas Lemar, who seems to have fallen out of favour with Diego Simeone.
France international Lemar has been in and out of the Atletico side this season, completing 90 minutes only once in La Liga while starting only one Champions League game. Simone admitted Lemar had ‘failed to live up to expectations’ so Spurs are among the clubs believing there is a deal to be done, and The Independent reports that it could involve an initial loan deal with the obligation to buy which would give Atletico their money back.
INTER PREFER BARCA STAR OVER ERIKSEN
It was thought selling Christian Eriksen this month for £17million might raise a third of the fee required to land Lemar but Inter have distanced themselves from the Denmark star.
Last week they were thought to be ‘very close’ to landing the 27-year-old but Inter chief Giuseppe Marotta says they have not been in any discussions with Spurs.
Antonio Conte would willingly take Eriksen but Corriere della Sera says the Inter boss would prefer to prioritise the signing of Arturo Vidal from Barcelona. Inter are also favourites to land Olivier Giroud from Chelsea.
