Gossip: Crisis? Tell them about an Arsenal war chest

WHY ARE PEOPLE PREPARED TO PAY SO MUCH FOR OXLADE CHAMBERLAIN?
We have long stuck to the notion that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain must have a damn fine agent. This is a player who turns 24 in August and yet has never started more than 17 games in a Premier League season, and apparently is wanted by the great and the good. We must be missing something.

On Wednesday, the Daily Telegraph not only report Liverpool interest in Oxlade-Chamberlain, but say that they are not put off by a valuation of £35m. Surely, surely, they will negotiate down from that price? Yes.

Fully understand why Jurgen Klopp may consider Oxlade-Chamberlain like Lallana, a player who he can nurture and mould to fit his Liverpool designs. But, for £35m,  there are better options from abroad. It would have to be £25m max.

ANOTHER ARSENAL WAR CHEST STORY AT A TIME OF CRISIS?!
You might be reading little more about this in one of our daily features later on, but for now we present only the news and the claims. Writing in the Daily Mirror, John Cross mentions that Arsenal will use a transfer war chest in the transfer window this summer. Sure.

Cross transcribes the following from his club propaganda sheet:

‘Arsenal are ready to spend £200million in the next window to fix their squad… Targets include Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette, Celtic frontman Moussa Dembele and left-back team-mate Kieran Tierney and Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha.’

We’re also told that Arsene Wenger will be able to sign a goalkeeper, two-full-backs, a deep-lying midfielder, two wide men and a striker. So more business than they have done in four years, then?

Like you, we also don’t think that Wenger should be given the chance. And here are the reasons why.

CHELSEA WANT MENDY
We’re ending with Chelsea, the Daily Mirror and Darren Lewis now, and his claim that Chelsea will battle Manchester City for Monaco left-back Benjamin Mendy.

Mendy has been one of the most impressive members of the Monaco team that will play their Champions League quarter-final first leg on Wednesday evening. The left-back was only signed from Marseille last summer, but Lewis reports that he will move for double that fee this summer.

In fairness, reports of Chelsea interest are nothing new. In the same paper, Steve Stammers said Chelsea would bid for Mendy and Bernardo Silva this summer. And why wouldn’t you?

AND THE REST
Manchester United fear David De Gea could have his head turned by the prospect of a £50m summer move to Real Madrid… West Ham will make a fresh move for Sunderland defender Lamine Kone this summer… Arsenal are pressing ahead with plans to appoint their first ever director of football, with former player Marc Overmars among the early contenders… Liverpool’s Alberto Moreno is being chased by Inter and AC Milan… West Brom are set to go head-to-head with Crystal Palace in a summer battle for Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho.
