Gossip: Giroud and, ahem Ronaldo to Chelsea…

Date published: Monday 29th January 2018 8:54

We are big fans of this. Arsenal will sell striker Olivier Giroud to Chelsea…but they will have to pay a pretty astonishing £35m for the 31-year-old.

The Mail report the story and include the line: ‘While Arsenal’s price is high, Giroud has the added bonus of being available for the Champions League and is already settled in London.’

That is one hell of a premium to pay just because the Frenchman already has an Oyster card and knows never to take the tube from Covent Garden to Leicester Square.

Dortmund did show interest in Giroud as part of the negotiations for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (that look close to completion) but may instead move for Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi, who thrived in the spotlight on Sunday.

What a load of old codswallop. There is no sign of this Sun online exclusive in the actual Sun newspaper on Monday morning, which is a surefire sign that it was cobbled together on a quiet Sunday afternoon in a desperate attempt to garner clicks. We did enjoy this quote from a ‘source’ though:

“Ronaldo to Chelsea would be a stunning deal, but it makes a lot of sense if you think about it.”

They might as well have put a big flashing neon sign on the story that reads: WE MADE THIS UP.

‘West Bromwich Albion are lining up an £18million bid for Watford striker Troy Deeney,’ according to the MailOnline. A reminder – were it required – that Deeney is almost 30 and has scored two Premier League goals this season. Were that move to go through he would be the second most expensive currently uncapped Englishman, behind his Watford teammate Andre Gray.

Baggies boss Alan Pardew did say on Saturday – after Jay Rodriguez was excellent – that he needed another striker for the sake of competition. But will they need to sell Jonny Evans to create the money to pay for Deeney?
