KLOPP OUT (IN, ACTUALLY)
Considering Roberto Martinez is offered at the same odds as Jurgen Klopp to become Real Madrid’s next manager, it never felt particularly as though the Spanish giants would land their ‘number one target’. The Liverpool boss has more than three years remaining on his Anfield contract and, simply put, just doesn’t feel like a Real coach.
It therefore comes as no surprise that the Daily Telegraph report how Klopp ‘will not entertain offers’ to leave for La Liga. The German ‘remains committed’ to the task at hand, and ‘has no intention of walking away’ from ‘such extraordinary progress’ on Merseyside.
As mad as it seems, Liverpool are in the ascendancy while Real are locked in a downward spiral. It would take a fool to swap the former for the latter right now.
NO WAY, JOSE (YES WAY, ACTUALLY)
The Daily Telegraph not only rule out one Real candidate, but they rule another in. There is a ‘growing campaign’ for Jose Mourinho to return to the Bernabeu, with the club “almost 100 per cent” sure they can lure him out of doing punditry work with Richard Keys and Andy Gray.
The Portuguese is said to be ‘keen on making the move back’ to a side he left in 2013, and that Santiago Solari ‘has no chance of staying in charge next season’. Shocker.
He will continue until the end of the season more out of necessity than choice, however, with no manager eager to take over mid-season. That said, there have already been ‘discussions between representatives’ about Mourinho coming back. And ‘there have been positive noises from his camp’ about a return.
Stepping off the transfer merry-go-round for a minute, Sport Bild let us know that Liverpool have contacted RB Leipzig to ‘signal their interest’ in Timo Werner. Which really is awfully nice of them.
Liverpool have been tracking Werner for quite some time, and the 23-year-old has little over a year left on his contract with the Bundesliga club. He has already been told that if he doesn’t extend those terms soon he will be sold this summer. How’s that for a f***ing ultimatum?
Bayern Munich are also likely to be interested. On that note, how humorous that three of last season’s four Champions League semi-finalists won’t even make this campaign’s quarters.
AND THE REST
Wales forward Gareth Bale, 29, could stand to lose up to £70m in salary if he leaves Real this summer… RB Leipzig are looking to sign Chelsea’s English forward Tammy Abraham, 21, who is on loan at Aston Villa… Juventus are considering pairing former boss Antonio Conte with ex-Italy midfielder Andrea Pirlo as his assistant if current manager Massimiliano Allegri leaves… However, even if Conte takes the job, he will still seek compensation from Chelsea following his departure from Stamford Bridge… English winger Jadon Sancho, 18, is set to snub Manchester United and stay in Germany with Borussia Dortmund… Everton have no plans to sell English centre-back Mason Holgate this summer despite interest from Championship side West Brom, where the 22-year-old is on loan… Leicester could ask Monaco to make 29-year-old Portugal playmaker Adrien Silva’s loan move permanent in order to bring down the upfront price of £40m-rated Belgium midfielder Youri Tielemans, 21, who is on loan at the Foxes from the Ligue 1 side.
