MAN UNITED MIDFIELD TALK
Fred is already in the bag but the accepted wisdom is that Manchester United want another midfielder.
Could it be Mateo Kovacic? According to Cadena Cope, Manchester United are one of three clubs – along with Juventus and Roma – who are interested in Real Madrid’s Croatian midfielder. He has said in the last few days that he believes he needs to leave the Spanish club to play more football. What a signing that would be.
Elsewhere, there seems to be a consensus that Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is too expensive (and Real Madrid could be interested even at £88m), leading to some renewed talk about Roma’s Lorenzo Pellegrini from the Manchester Evening News, while the Independent even suggest that Marouane Fellaini could still solve all Jose Mourinho’s problems by staying.
‘EMERY TRIES TO SEDUCE BANEGA’
That is the headline in Estadio Deportivo, who claim that Unai Emery has called Ever Banega – who he worked alongside at both Valencia and Sevilla – to persuade him to move to Arsenal, with the Mirror adding that he wants him to play in the central position of a 4-2-3-1 behind the striker.
The Spanish report mentions a figure of £17.5m, and that figure will go up beyond £20m if the Gunners wait until the final days of the transfer window.
Emery has previously said of Banega: “I love him, because he’s a boy who loves football, who endears himself to you and who gives you all of his heart and his ability — and he has a lot.”
HAMMERS WARY ON WILSHERE
Poor Jack Wilshere. He has left Arsenal in search of more first-team football and West Ham are said to be serious suitors. But there is a catch; West Ham reportedly have doubts about his fitness and only want to offer him a one-year deal with an option to extend.
The Sun claim that West Ham see Wilshere as a replacement for the injured Manuel Lanzini but are wary – presumably after their problems with Andy Carroll – which could ‘allow the likes of Everton to steal in, with Marco Silva keen to take him to Goodison Park as he makes his own changes on Merseyside’.
