ARTETA IS GETTING ARSENAL GIG
The more you hear about Arsenal, the more it becomes obvious that Mikel Arteta is going to be the club’s next manager. This is a massive bloody gamble.
In the Independent, Miguel Delaney writes that Arsenal believe ‘no candidate ticks the boxes like Arteta does’, which indicates that one of the boxes isn’t ‘has previously been a football manager’.
In fairness, with Luis Enrique wanting all the money and Max Allegri seemingly prepared to stay at Juventus, the other options have all moved away from centre stage. If Arsenal do have this dream about a head coach taking them forward, Arteta certainly does have some pedigree.
Also, I have £10 on him at 25/1. Make it happen.
ARSENAL TALKS WITH SERI
Sticking with Arsenal, and don’t think their transfer business has ground to a halt just because they are in the process of signing a new manager. If Arteta is going to be Arsene Wenger’s replacement in a head coach capacity, he will not be fully responsible for transfers anyway.
Sky Sports, and others, say that Arsenal have held talks with the representatives of Nice midfielder Jean Michael Seri. We’re also told that Chelsea have a serious interest in Seri, who will cost around £40m.
Given that Sky Sports say no deal will be done until a new manager is announced, Chelsea could steal in… if they weren’t also in the process of changing their manager.
MAN UNITED CONFIDENT ON TOBY
Manchester United are going to buy some defenders this summer. They will definitely buy a left-back, probably buy a centre-back and may well buy a right-back. That’s all of the backs.
One of those backs could be Toby Alderweireld. The Belgian has made it clear in private that he would be prepared to entertain offers to earn a lot more money. Manchester United might well offer him a lot more money, and also offer Spurs enough money to accept a bid.
The Evening Standard say that United are prepared to make an offer of more than £40m for Alderweireld, who is 29. He’s also a brilliant defender, so that seems a good price. We’re also told that Tottenham will spend £50m on Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt as his replacement.
AND THE REST
Mauricio Pochettino is ready to say no if Chelsea come calling… West Ham want England keeper Tom Heaton to replace Joe Hart… Leicester and West Ham will make moves to sign Celtic’s Patrick Roberts… Everton, Newcastle and Huddersfield are interested Kosovo international Donis Avdijaj.
