Gossip: Man United eye ‘No 1 target’ in £100m double swoop

Jose Mourinho is pretty much obsessed with Willian. You know how Graeme Souness has a fixation on Paul Pogba, and football is completely obsessed with coming home? Mourinho has the same thing with his former trusted Chelsea disciple.

According to The Sun, the Manchester United manager may finally get his wish for a reunion. The club ‘believe they will land’ the Brazilian now he is out of the World Cup, and Chelsea have placed a £60m valuation on his lovely head.

Willian is Mourinho’s ‘No 1 target’ – which is weird when he’s already signed three other players this summer – with the manager ‘having lost faith in Anthony Martial last term’. Quite where it all leaves Martial is apparently up to us to speculate.

Of course, there is no guarantee United even land Willian. Let Duncan Castles explain, on the Transfer Window Podcast:

“Does it make sense for Barcelona to buy Willian? What they are looking for is an explosive player to liberate Messi.

“Barcelona are trying to solve the problem for their best player by pursuing a player like Willian, who they think will improve their tactical options.

“There’s a potential for Manchester United to come back in there. But the price is high.

“They’ve been looking at other targets. Obviously Gareth Bale is a strong possibility for them because of what the situation is at Real Madrid.”

Considering those quotes above, quite how the Manchester Evening News get to a headline of ‘Lionel Messi ‘could stop Manchester United signing Willian” is anyone’s guess. The answer, if you’re still wondering, will probably include the words ‘completely’ and ‘shameless’.

But the crux of Castles’ point is clear: if United want Willian, they’ll have to go through Barca.

We love Tuttomercatoweb. We love them because their exclusives generally comprise of just one paragraph, and websites fueled on transfer speculation have to extrapolate an entire article from them. It’s great fun.

On that note, Tuttomercatoweb have a one-paragraph exclusive, and it’s about time we extrapolated at least part of an entire article based on it. Here is the story in its entirety, complete with dodgy Google Translate:

‘Manchester United at work on the market. Incoming maxi bid for PSV striker Eindhoven Hirving Lozano. The British company is preparing a proposal for over 40 million. In the coming days the start of the negotiation. Manchester United is serious, Lozano goal …’

So United want Lozano from PSV. He will cost over £40m. They will start negotiations soon, presumably after the winger has calmed down from his World Cup exploits. United are ‘serious’.

What an Italian website knows about an English club signing a Mexican from a Dutch club is beyond us mere mortals. Just drink in the beautiful transfer rumours, you fiends.

We finish with the Daily Mirror, for it is they who tell us that Liverpool might just rival Tottenham for the signature of Jack Grealish. The belief was that the Reds had barley shown a passing interest due to the winger’s £40m valuation, but things have changed.

John Richardson claims that that figure has been ‘drastically reduced to half’ as Villa have come to the realization that no-one is batsh*t mental enough to spend that sort of money on a Championship forward. They hope that and Liverpool’s interest will ‘spark a bidding war’.

Tottenham are only prepared to go as high as £15m, but with Villa’s entire summer transfer plans revolving around how much money they can bring in, they may have to cave in eventually. Liverpool’s ears might have perked up, but Spurs are still in ‘pole position’. Jurgen Klopp ‘hasn’t responded with a firm bid’ as of yet.

West Ham have made a £17.5m bid for Borussia Dortmund’s Ukrainian forward Andriy Yarmolenko, 28, who joined the German club last year for £23m… The Hammers are also set to finalise their move for former Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere, 26, who is now a free agent, on Monday… United States international Erik Palmer-Brown, 21, has been loaned by Manchester City to Eredivisie side NAC Breda for the new season… Emil Forsberg’s performances for Sweden at the World Cup have caught the attention of Everton, who are set to move for the 26-year-old RB Leipzig midfielder… Defender Kieran Tierney, 21, is set to remain at Celtic with Everton deciding against meeting Celtic’s £25m price tag.
