Gossip: Man United to hijack another Chelsea transfer?

Matt Stead

Jose Mourinho has a taste for it now. Not content with hijacking Chelsea’s move for Romelu Lukaku, the Portuguese is now considering jumping ahead of the Blues for another deal.

Chelsea’s move for Tiemoue Bakayoko has been as protracted as they come, with the Monaco midfielder identified as Antonio Conte’s primary target long ago. But negotiations have stalled, and the deal is far from done. United, as a result, could pounce. Sound familiar?

According to The Sun, Mourinho has given United the green light to pursue Bakayoko if a deal for Nemanja Matic cannot be agreed. Chelsea are hardly likely to want to sell one of their players to United after recent events, and so Bakayoko could be following Lukaku soon.

United’s interest in both Matic and Bakayoko could be born out of the fact that Tottenham are intent on keeping Eric Dier.

Both the Independent and the Daily Mail have similar lines on the England international, with Tottenham insistent that Dier is not for sale.

Dier might well remain a target for United, but ‘no further talks are understood to have taken place since the end of the season’. That is transfer speak for ‘move on’.

We will finish with an update on Dani Alves, whose planned move to Manchester City from Juventus seemed almost certain at one stage this summer.

Not so, according to the Daily Record. Yer man Duncan Castles claims that Paris Saint-Germain ‘have made a successful final-hours intervention,’ and will sign the player instead of him moving to the Etihad Stadium.

The Brazilian ‘has been offered a pivotal role’ in the French capital, and he is now expected to reject advances from Manchester.

It should be added that there are no such reports emanating from France, with L’Equipe largely ignoring the story. Read into that what you will.
