UNITED TO ROB THE OLD LADY AGAIN
Paulo Dybala might have only narrowly missed out on the list of Europe’s top scorers in 2017, but Manchester United are not bothered. The Juventus forward has scored just one goal fewer than Luis Suarez this calendar year, and one more than Bafetimbi Gomis. No wonder clubs are flocking to buy him.
His year has been phenomenal, but Dybala’s season thus far has been without equal. He has scored ten goals in six Serie A games, including two hat-tricks. Those at Old Trafford have taken notice.
According to the Sunday People, United are lining up a potential move for the forward. Barcelona are thought to be leading this particular race, but Ed Woodward ‘has made it clear to Dybala’s management team that, if he does decide to quit Juventus, Jose Mourinho wants him at Old Trafford.’
Woodward is said to have a positive relationship with Juve director Beppe Marotta – a claim which seems to be founded solely on United buying Paul Pogba from the Italian side in summer 2016 – and the People somehow twist the lack of release clause in Dybala’s contract into a positive for United. It means he is ‘in charge of his own destiny’, apparently.
Juve would still have to accept any potential bid, it must be added. Said offer could reach as high as £155million. Which is a lot.
MESUT TO MANCHESTER
You know what would be all sorts of hilarious? Mesut Ozil leaving Arsenal to join United on a free next summer.
The Sunday Mirror report that it is more than a possibility. According to John Richardson, ‘Ozil’s advisors have put out feelers over a potential move to Manchester United and the feedback has been encouraging.’
Mourinho, who once branded the German a ‘coward’, is still a ‘big fan’, and ‘would encourage the Old Trafford hierarchy’ to make a move if, as expected, Ozil’s contract is allowed to run down to its expiration date next summer.
Ozil is also wanted by Inter Milan, but it is added that he would rather stay in the Premier League, and is eager to have the opportunity to win ‘major trophies’. Ouch. Poor FA Cup and Community Shield. And the bloody Emirates Cup!
This is not the first time this rumour has been reported, of course. It first reared its beautiful head back in November, and again earlier this week. The rumour came from a different outlet each time. There is no smoke without fire.
ALEXIS (NOT) TO MANCHESTER
In other news of really bloody good Arsenal players leaving for free next summer to join a Manchester-based club, The Sun bring us news on Alexis Sanchez.
It’s bad news, however. They report that City ‘fear that they may be blown out of the water by PSG in the race’ to sign the Chilean.
The key is that PSG can start official talks with Sanchez in January as a European club while, as a Premier League rival, City can only do so in the summer.
This relies on believing rules won’t be bent into submission and agreements weren’t made in the summer when Sanchez was negotiating with City, mind you.
Also, it’s a Daniel Cutts exclusive. Here are a list of his recent exclusives for The Sun (the website, as they don’t let him write for the actual newspaper):
