NOW ARSENAL ARE IN FOR VIDA, BUT…
The only big new transfer claim on Saturday morning is that Unai Emery is interested in signing Croatian World Cup star Domagoj Vida. Liverpool were credited with interest in a player worth £25m, but nothing ever came of it.
The Sun’s Mark Irwin claims that Arsenal will plot a move for Vida if they can sell one of Shkodran Mustafi or Danny Welbeck before the end of the transfer window. Given that that seems unlikely, it sounds like a non-starter.
We also take most Vida rumours with a pinch of salt, given that his club Besiktas are clearly happy to sell him having signed him for just £8m in January. The suspicion is that Vida overperformed at the World Cup and getting £25m for him would be a fine effort.
We did enjoy this line from Irwin:
‘Arsenal already have SIX central defenders on their books, including injured skipper Laurent Koscielny and £16million newcomer Sokratis Papastathopoulos. But he is not convinced by Mustafi, Calum Chambers and Rob Holding and does not believe rookie Konstantinos Mavropanos is ready for regular Premier League football.’
Heck of a lot on Papastathopoulos’ shoulders then, given that Koscielny is out for five months.
PSG WANT ROJO
Interesting one this. Marcos Rojo has been strongly lined with a move to Everton and Zenit St Petersburg, but we honestly didn’t expect him to get a promotion. According to The Sun, that’s exactly what Rojo is in line for.
They have an exclusive on the news that Rojo is wanted by Paris Saint-Germain, which would be very strange indeed. Suppose he would be decent backup, but at 28 and at a cost of £25m, is he really what PSG need?
This could all be agent talk of course, trying to drive up interest in the player and smoking out a bid from Everton. We still think he ends up at Goodison.
AND MARTIAL SET TO STAY
Well what a surprise. With a manager that wants to get rid of a player but only to a foreign club, a player that wants to leave but wants to stay in England and a club that have slapped a £70m asking price on the player, it’s hardly a shock that Anthony Martial might get stuck at Manchester United this season.
The Daily Mirror go big on the story that Martial might be forced to stay. Given that there are only six days left in the transfer window and there has been no movement on his departure, it’s hardly massive news.
‘United don’t want to sell the Frenchman unless they can bring in a direct replacement — and moves to sign long-term targets Willian and Inter Milan’s Croatia World Cup 2018 hero Ivan Perisic have stalled,’ we are told. And therein lies the issue with closing the transfer window early after a World Cup.
The Mirror quote Manchester United’s asking price for Martial as £80m. Good luck getting a club outside of England to pay that.
AND THE REST
Fulham are trying to sign Real Madrid left-back Theo Hernandez on loan… Joe Hart is set to join Burnley from Manchester City… West Ham United have revived their interest in Brazilian winger Bernard.
