Gossip: Martinez for Real. Or Pochettino next summer

REAL LATEST
While The Sun stick to their guns and insist Mauricio Pochettino will be the next Real Madrid manager in a double-your-money £17m-a-year deal even if that has to wait until the summer, the Daily Mail now say Roberto Martinez is ‘the shock leading candidate’.

You’ve got to hand it to a fella who failed upwards as far as the Belgium job and could now land the biggest job in club football on what remains a flimsy-looking CV.

One part of his appeal – and the thing that ultimately appears to have done for Antonio Conte – is his strong relationship with Eden Hazard, who remains Real Madrid’s top target on the pitch.

Real Madrid’s task in recruiting Martinez will not be straightforward; he has no release clause in his contract with the Belgian FA, who would be reluctant to lose Martinez so soon after assistant Thierry Henry left for Monaco.

AS, meanwhile, says Michael Laudrup has turned down the chance to return to his former club as manager, while a poll in Marca has Gareth Bale top of the list of Real’s worst performing players.

And to complete the admin of this Real Madrid round-up, the Mail also claim Juventus will move for James Rodriguez in January if Bayern Munich cut short his loan move from Madrid. Think that’s everything.

FRENCH FANCY
Paris St Germain are eyeing up a summer move for Manchester United flop Alexis Sanchez next summer. The Sun reckon such a move for a player PSG wanted to sign from Arsenal, who has struggled at Old Trafford, and whose wages rule out all but the super-rich, would be a ‘shock swoop’. It would not.

BRIT EXPENSIVE
Arsenal’s new transfer committee appear to be surprised that British players are expensive. The Mail sadly shakes its head and reports that Arsenal – who last bought a British player when shelling out all of £2.5m for Rob Holding in 2016 – will have no choice but to look overseas in the future in what clearly represents a dramatic policy shift in north London.

Arsenal have, according to the Mail, been offered two ‘premium homegrown players’ recently but have ‘gawped at the price’. Big fans of that. More gawping, please.
