Gossip: No Ox to Liverpool, Mahrez to Arsenal

Date published: Monday 5th June 2017 12:37

We have never quite believed that Liverpool were as ‘into’ Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as the press would have had you believe, but the latest news – from the Daily Mirror – that the Arsenal midfielder/wing-back is in talks to sign a new long-term deal with the Gunners is being sold as a ‘snub’ to Liverpool.

The good news for Liverpool as that they do appear close to signing Roma winger Mohamed Salah for around £35m, which would equal the club-record fee they paid for Andy Carroll. There are reasons to be optimistic at Liverpool, even if the Daily Express have taken nothing but a flier with claims that they are in talks with Alexandre Lacazette.

Arsene Wenger took the unusual step of openly talking about Riyad Mahrez on Friday, and now The Sun claim that Leicester have accepted that the Algerian winger will leave this summer. Monaco and PSG are also said to be interested, but Arsenal are the favourites as ‘it is understood the Algerian is a big admirer of the Frenchman and his style of play’.

But Leicester want Mahrez’s replacement through the door before they sanction a sale, and their preferred option is Swansea man Gylfi Sigurdsson, who could cost them £30m. Whether he will want to join is another matter entirely; you’re not in Europe anymore, people.
