Gossip: Sanchez, Perisic, Van Dijk to Chelsea, Balde to Spurs

Well, who saw this coming? Chelsea lost 3-2 to Burnley on Saturday (and Gary Cahill to suspension) and now the Daily Mirror claim that they are ‘preparing’ a £50m bid for Southampton’s want-away defender Virgil van Dijk.

The story continues: ‘Liverpool, who thought they had Van Dijk in the bag earlier in the summer before a tapping-up row wrecked the deal, remain interested in signing the Dutchman. Manchester City have also asked to be kept fully up to speed with developments.’

But the Mirror claim that Chelsea are pretty confident of landing the Dutchman, while the Telegraph repeat their claim that ‘a deal for Leicester City’s Danny Drinkwater is in progress’. But it is unlikely to go through before the weekend, when David Luiz could end up playing in midfield alongside N’Golo Kante because of the suspension of Cesc Fabregas.

And a separate report in the Daily Mirror claims that Chelsea are considering a late move for Manchester United target target Ivan Perisic. Though former Chelsea striker Hernan Crespo said: “It’s possible he joins Chelsea – but he plays on the left and on the left you have Eden Hazard, Perisic and Marcos Alonso.”

When the Daily Mirror report that Tottenham ‘are paying closer attention to Lazio star Keita Balde after he reacted angrily to being left out of his club’s Supercoppa Italiana squad’, we do wonder whether they really are ‘paying closer attention’, or it is just some lovely 2 + 2 work on what is usually a quiet day for transfer gossip. Anyway, Balde has indeed reacted angrily to being left out of his club’s Supercoppa Italiana squad, but that’s because he has publicly angled for a move to opponents Juventus.

According to the Mirror: ‘Lazio do not want to sell Balde to the Serie A champions though, allowing Spurs, West Ham and France’s Monaco into the hunt for a player who has just 12 months left on his current deal.’

It did look like Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez would become Tottenham’s first signing of the summer but now Dutch newspaper Telegraaf claims that both Chelsea and Real Madrid are also interested in the Colombian centre-half, though this may just be a ploy to force Spurs into upping their original £36m offer. The suggestion is that Sanchez has his heart set on Tottenham
