MAN UNITED IN FOR VRSALJKO
Hey friend. Did you realise that the transfer window is already open? Because it is. It is open good and proper. Maybe clubs will spend all of their money today, like me in the Boxing Day sales when I buy things that don’t fit and I don’t like just because they’re cheap. Who doesn’t like false economy?
Anyway, Manchester United apparently want to sign Atletico Madrid right-back Sime Vrsaljko, who is on their list of possible defender signings this summer. He played for Atletico in their 3-0 Europa League final win on Wednesday evening.
Vrsaljko would cost around £30m, apparently. He was also sodding brilliant on one version of Football Manager, which is an important piece of research.
PELLEGRINI OR RAFA TO WEST HAM?
West Ham seem to have been played by Paulo Fonseca. The Shakhtar Donetsk managed to get himself filmed leaving the club after having an interview, leading to most people assuming the handsome bugger would be the next Portuguese manager in the Premier League. Forty-eight hours later, Fonseca is apparently close to signing a new deal with Shakhtar. Looks like West Ham owners worked their magic again.
Now, Sky Sports say that former Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has been in talks with West Ham. Unfortunately, they also say that Pellegrini wants an awful lot more money than the Hammers are willing to pay. It’s going as swimmingly as ever.
Elsewhere, the Daily Mirror say that West Ham will make an approach to Rafael Benitez because he is at the top of their managerial shortlist. Darren Lewis says that West Ham are confident of getting their man because they have a good relationship with Rafa.
ARSENAL GOING GREEK AGAIN
Two days ago, Arsenal were apparently signing Turkish central defender Caglar Soyuncu for a fee of £35m from Freiburg. Now it looks like the price tag is persuading Arsenal against the move. That’s probably fair enough.
Instead, the Daily Mail say that Arsenal will sign Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of half as much. It is worth saying that Papastathopoulos is eight years older than Soyuncu, which probably explains the price difference.
Also, are Arsenal now exclusively signing current or former Borussia Dortmund players? Is Sven Mislintat really is a transfer guru, shouldn’t he have bigger ideas than ‘sign this guy I know’?
AND THE REST
Arsenal also want to pay £3m to sign Jonny Evans… Kevin Wimmer will leave Stoke this summer, probably for Hannover… Wolves want to sign Milan striker Andre Silva.
